Dr. Jerome Adams addressed the fact that Black, Latino and other people of color in the US are disproportionately affected by COVID-19. However, Dr. Adams drew criticism for the language he used urging those communities to avoid drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Many pointed out that Dr. Adams overlooked systemic issues that experts say contribute to the disproportionate impacts of coronavirus.
